I did see you are interested in the marketing aspect of journalism, as am I. I do mean online, but more specifically, I mean how journalists use social networking and the community. Journalism today is so minimally just about knowing how to be a good writer or reporter. I think it's been broadened to be about having a good sense of information gathering and dissemination. Let's call it like the new new new journalism :)

I have really only scratched the surface with talking about the media, but I did do a post about how the news business needs to give up some "control:" http://www.y-rd.com/2009/01/news-business-ultimate-control-freak.html

I'm so glad I found your insightful blog, because it seems like it's right up my alley. You seem to get what I'm talking about.

Justin & Ellie, thank you for reading and so glad you enjoy!

@Ellie, being a journalist definitely isn't easy all the time. I'm interested to hear more about the marketing aspect that your mentioned. Did you mean just in reference to stuff that's online? If you check out my "About" page, you'll see that's a subject I'm very interested in, and I hope to write a lot about related topics here.

I also love your blog, and this is a fascinating post to me as a Millennial journalist like you. The work/life thing has gotten so much worse, because now journalists can be connected at all times. There is no escape from our e-mail.

After the work/life issue, I think the hardest thing for younger journalists to realize is the assortment of roles one might end up in with a career in journalism. I think it might have been a little over-romanticized to be a cool reporter gig. Sometimes it is, but there's so much more that goes into it, such as marketing, etc. Actually though, I think the Web geeky-type stuff will eventually be romanticized as well:)

Oh journalism, it just rocks. As does being a Millennial.

Holy crap! I just found your blog through Monica Obrien's twitter, and I love it. I am 23, myself a millenial, and am just absolutely fascinated by the generational differences (specifically in the workplace) and I find your blog to be awesome! I have added you to my RSS feed. Thanks!
